Taxpayers, including more than 900 on Long Island, are due to receive $123.5 million in refund checks that were returned because of bad mailing addresses. "We are eager to get this money into the hands of taxpayers, so don't delay if you think you are missing a refund," IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman said in a statement. "The sooner you update your address information, the quicker you can get your refund." A total of $1 million in refund checks await Long Island taxpayers. In Nassau, the average amount is $1,158; in Suffolk, it's $1,075. To receive your refund, update your address. Go to IRS.gov and use the "Where's My Refund?" tool. Or call 800-829-1954 for instructions on how to update your address. Nationally, the average amount of a returned check this year is $1,148, compared with $990 last year. A higher number of refunds this year - likely fueled by the first-time homebuyer's credit and recovery rebate credit - has resulted in a corresponding rise in undeliverable refunds of about 16 percent. The federal agency recommends using direct deposit to avoid undeliverable payments.
Once a year, some newspapers print the name of people owed an unclaimed IRS refund. You can see an example in this
